I would like to invite the students (and their guests) from my Sociology of Anarchism class to my home for an after-the-semester potluck.

When
Friday May 21st, 2010 — 3 PM to 7 PM.

Why should you come?
Hey, potlucks are awesome (not to mention highly-anarchistic). What other reason does one ultimately need? Good food, good company, good music (we can play hours of anarchist musicians/bands/MCs/performers!), and good conversation. This has been an amazing semester for me, and hopefully an interesting and unique one for you. I’d like to get the chance to speak more casually with folks from the class (especially those I haven’t had much opportunity to chat with)!

Why after the semester?
Even though this class is intended to be anti-authoritarian, I am still the ultimate arbitrator of grades (as the class has entrusted me to be). Consequently, it would be naive to assume that students can truly be free to choose whether or not to attend an event hosted by their instructor when they are still under that instructor’s authority. This party will be after the grade submission date for the Spring semester (May 11) so there is no risk of a student’s non-attendance at the party influencing their grade. It wouldn’t, of course, but just by pretending authority is not real is not enough to make it disappear…. right?

Who can come?
You, of course! But, also feel free to bring along your loved ones, including partners and children.

What can you bring?
Some food (e.g. a dish) to share. And B.Y.O.B. A number of people in the class have dietary restrictions (including vegetarians and vegans), so it would be nice if folks could take those restrictions into consideration when making their choices of what to share. I don’t think there’s much need for a host to coordinate too much with potlucks. Things “magically” tend to work themselves out (just as anarchists argue things will) when people choose to voluntarily associate in a cooperative and horizontal fashion, and without a boss breathing down their neck. Also, if you cannot bring something, that’s ok, you should come anyway!

Other details…
There is street-parking for folks who drive and space for bikes for those who ride. Car-pooling is a great idea if you are in the driving category. The address is 397 Cloverdale Avenue. Before heading-out, it might be good to get directions.

How to schedule
Please vote for your preferences here. If you think you can make it (even if you need to alter your schedule), err on the “good” side.
